# Upload images error HTTP error

 * Both browser upload and the new WordPress upload don’t seem to want to upload
   images, in articles or on the Add Media page.
 * I get the error ‘HTTP error.’ come up. Seems to be FF and Chrome, not tested
   IE. Tried disabling plugins, but don’t think it is them.
 * Read others advice like add AddType x-mapp-php5 .php to .htaccess, that just
   took the site down – I did it to the root .htaccess, as there isn’t one in /wp-
   content/ – should there be?
    Tried plugin ‘Image Upload HTTP Error Fix’ but it
   didn’t seem to help much.
 * Occasionally it will work, it always uploads the image, but looks like it hasn’t
   until you visit the gallery – it never crunches and rarely increases the % from
   0%. However usually images have 0px sizes, which is odd.
 * All used to work find a few weeks ago, probable no more than 2, got temperamental,
   now really bad!
 * Help!

 * Are you on shared hosting? Hav your provider made any changes on the server?
   Try checking the error log for clues.
 * Also check your wp-content folder for permission-issues.

 * Ask your hosts if your domain is set to use PHP as FastCGI or an Apache Module.
   FastCGI will cause upload errors.

 * Server API: CGI/FastCGI – is that bad?
 * _Also check your wp-content folder for permission-issues. _
    What does that mean?
   What sort of errors? Sorry, not too clued up on server side of stuff, and only
   understand basic PHP!
 * Yeah shared hosting – Fasthosts

 * Well, it explains why you’re having upload issues, yes.
 * > What does that mean?
 * Normally, I’d suggest changing the permissions on the wp-content directory to
   766 & if you still had problems, trying 767, 775 or 777. However, I’m not sure
   that it is relevant in this case. It’s the way in which PHP has been set up on
   the server that ‘s probably the issue.

 * Where I to contact the host, as a complete novice, what would I ask them to do?
 * Thanks both for the help 🙂

 * Ask them if your site can be moved to a server where PHP is set up as an Apache
   Module.

 * Moved serves from an Apache 1.3 to an Apache 2.2 server. The site seems quicker,
   but still has some upload errors. When doing browser upload, I get the error ‘
   Operation timed out after 25 seconds with 0 bytes received’.
 * As far as I can see we still have Server API: CGI/FastCGI… can’t see how I can
   upgrade or change that.
 * Any more ideas?

 * Could enabling _CGI (Perl, Python)_ improve the situation?

 * New uploader now gets almost there, (usually in the 90%’s) and then returns a
   HTTP error…
 * Browser uploader times out.
 * Both upload images, but they are 0px in size…
