 * What happens when you try to upload a plugin in WP’s plugin installer interface
   without this plugin being active?

 * Without the plugin it works OK. There are no problems, if it’s below 2MB (which
   is why I installed ‘Upload Larger Plugins’). But once I activate ‘Upload Larger
   Plugins’ it throws that error – even on tiny – e.g. 18kb plugins.
 * Thanks for responding – it is much appreciated!

 * If you update to today’s version 1.6 release, what is the wording shown above
   the drag/drop uploader box?

 * “If you have a plugin in a .zip format, you may install it by uploading it here.”

 * And that’s definitely version 1.6 if you check on your ‘Plugins’ page?

 * Yes – definitely version 1.6.

 * Unfortunately I don’t have any good guesses. The 1.6 update added a prior warning
   if the system’s temporary directory was not writeable (the plugin works via receiving
   chunks, one at a time, from the browser and writing them to a temporary location,
   then stitching them all together at the end). Does anything get logged in your
   webserver’s PHP logs? What version of WP are you using?

 * WordPress 5.6.
 * I needed to use ‘Upload Larger Plugins’ to let me install ‘UpdraftPlus’.
    And…
   I needed to use UpdraftPlus because this is for a site migration and I have limited
   access to the original site – so I won’t be able to view PHP logs, etc.

 * That is unfortunate! I was hoping you might be able to give me FTP access so
   that I can investigate the problem. Usually you only see that error if the hosting
   is set up with bad file permissions.
 * You could install the free version of UpdraftPlus. The backups it takes are identical,
   except you won’t get a backup of any additional files that the owner has manually
   added into the root directory of the website. You could use a plugin like WP
   File Manager to inspect whether any such non-WP files even exist.

 * I’ve requested FTP access – so I can just install UpdraftPlus via FTP…
 * I wouldn’t be at all surprised that the hosting where the site is currently set-
   up is far from being well configured.

 * If you are willing and able to share FTP details, then you could send them to
   me using the contact form at [http://www.simbahosting.co.uk](http://www.simbahosting.co.uk)–
   I might at least be able to improve the error message if I can discern what the
   cause is.
