• Hello,

I recently wanted to upload my own theme called Mountain into the WordPress Theme Directory. First it said that my version needs to be higher than 1.0.5. After changing this to 1.0.6 it said that a theme with this name is already taken. Upon searching a theme with this name I couldn’t find any. Even the link https://wordpress.org/themes/mountain/ doesn’t work. If you search for “Mountain” you only find Nirvana (has nirvana as the text domain) and Mountain Creek (has mountaincreek as the text domain).

Do you have an explenation for this? What could I do? Changing my theme name would be too much of an effort and would be the very last option.

    Best regards,
    Newb1e

  • After doing some digging, I found that there was a theme named Mountain, but it was suspended from the repository for using non-GPL scripts. Unfortunately, due to a technical limitation, the name is “used up” and I don’t believe that it can be released.

Thank you for your fast response. Looks like I have to rename it. Topic resolved.

Just a quick note, the best place to check if a theme name has been submitted to the WordPress theme repository/directory is this page: https://themes.svn.wordpress.org

Every theme ever submitted is listed there, just search the page for the theme “slug”; and, as noted above, it’s a single use system currently.

Really appreciated your help! 🙂 I was already wondering if there is a safe way to find out wether a theme name was used or not.
