• I’m using 2.3.3 and wish to upgrade to 2.5.1. I installed 2.3.3 using Fantastico on cPanel. After installation, I hired someone to customize the Kubrick theme to match my website. The customized theme has a different name (ie. it’s not called Kubrick) and it’s in the theme folder. After backing up my blog and disabling Akismet (my only plug-in thus far), I went to cPanel to upgrade using Fantasico. I received the warning message only to use Fantastico to update if “no files, languages, themes have been modified,” so I left. I found an article on the Easy WordPress blog that says if your theme is in the theme folder, it should be okay, and that the Fantastico warning basically only applies to languages and the sort. Is this true? I tried asking for clarification on the blog, but my comment would not post, so I came here. 🙂 Is it worthwhile for me to try upgrading using Fantastico and how do I make sure Kubrick doesn’t over-ride my customized blog theme? Or should I try to upgrade manually (which I’ve never done)?

    Thanks!

  • It should be okay, especially if the theme files are not in the wp-content/theme/default folder. Otherwise you would never be able to add themes (or plugins) to a Fantastico install and later upgrade using Fantastico.

But you can buy an insurance policy that will cover almost all mishaps–backup all your files and your database before you begin!!!!!!!!

Thank you, Michael. I have already backed up. I’ll let you know how it goes. I hope to get this done by Sunday.

The upgrade using Fantastico went off without a hitch. My customized theme looks just the same as before. Thanks!
