I’ve recently taken over a WP website. I have experience with several CMSs, but just now becoming familiar with WP. The people who maintained this site before me have not done any upgrades. The site is at 4.4.13. Can I run the upgrade to 4.9.1 or should I do it incrementally? If incrementally, what is the recommended sequence? Thank you in advance for any help offered.

I’d go for it — but only after making a full backup of all files and the database.

Disable all plugins, update WordPress, update the plugins, and then re-enable the ones you disabled.

Before starting, check to see if there’s an update for the theme. If it’s a commercial theme, you may have to re-buy it to obtain the update license.

Yup. I’ll be backing up before. The theme is twenty eleven which, if I understand correctly, is one of the free bundled themes. So no worries there. The plugins are Dropdown Menu Widget, Spider Event Calender, and Subscribr. I’ve already undated them per another person’s rec. I’m hoping those plugins and that theme aren’t all that sensitive to a WP upgrade. Thanks for the quick response, Steve. I think I’ll give it a try later tonight.

    Steve,
Upgrade went without incident. Very painless. Thanks again for your support.
