• I need to upgrade WP and all installed plugins (about 12 of them) from 3.5.x to the latest version 3.9.1. I had a look at this document: http://codex.wordpress.org/Updating_WordPress.

    1. I was just wondering how I should go about upgrading the live site. Should I first do the upgrade in the local or staging version?
    2. How reliable is one-click upgrade? Or should I first try one-click upgrade in my local copy?
    3. What do I do if some of the plugins are not supported by the latest version?
    4. How do I check if the core files have been modified? The website was initially created by another developer.

  • As you have such an old version of WordPress, you will need to carry out a series of smaller manual upgrades. See Upgrading_WordPress_Extended for the full details.

If I first upgrade my installed version in localhost, is there a way to easily replicate it in the production? or do I have to repeat the steps manually in the live site?

If you follow the steps @esmi said and successfully get your theme running on 3.9.1 you should be fine. Just install WordPress 3.9.1 on your production server 🙂
