Upgrading from 3.1.4 to current

I’m not sure who wrote that part of the codex, but you can upgrade straight there in one shot just fine. No need to do it step by step.

Make a backup of both the files and the database, of course, but the updater will handle an upgrade all the way back to the beginning of WordPress, no problem.
