 * My host provides WP 1.0. I’d like to upgrade to 1.2, how is that best done?

Also, I’d like to change the layout css to Kings “Dots”. How do you get that
done? Finally. Do you think the answer to the second question could be added
   to the wiki? Alan

 * OK. When you say your host provides WP that is fine. But WP does not need access
to any part of your server except your own web space. There is therefore nothing
to prevent you installing Word Press in any directory in your domain. I am assuming
you have ftp. You do not need to trouble the server admins at all. What you will
need though is to be on a server that includes at least on mysql db in your account.
As to Q2 all things to do with style are in the file wp-layout.css.You can download
the css for any site you like (assuming the owner doesn’t mind ) and simply upload
the file to the directory with the file named as wp-layout.css Worth keeping
a copy of the original file of course in case it blows up. To alter the file
if you need to I would strongly advise that you do not use the edit template
function in wp admin which is for emergency use only when you are away from your
own machine. Instead simply open your local copy in any text editor and have
a good look at it. When you are ready – start hacking. Then ftp it to your server.
Good Luck. Post again by all means.

 * Root, unfortunately not all if your reply is showing up in the field. It is,
   in a word, getting truncated.

 * BTW, pestering them is what a host’s tech support is for.

 * My post looks fine from here. But I am on Firefox. Performance in other browsers
   can be erratic.

 * mythusmage,
Download the version of wp you want and install it yourself. [http://wiki.wordpress.org/index.php/StyleCompetition](http://wiki.wordpress.org/index.php/StyleCompetition)
thats the link to the instructions in the wiki.
