 * Hi,
    Surprises are really nice … when it’s your birthday, your anniversary, and/
   or Christmas. However … I’ve just been through 9 long months of #$%@ getting
   my site up and running. I haven’t even had my GRAND OPENING yet! I’m still doing
   content!!! But, here I sit, looking at upgrades for both WP **and** my theme.
   Please, to avoid nasty surprises, and a lot of rework, just exactly what will
   I lose if I do these upgrades? And, what can I do to avoid the inevitable nasty
   surprises? Thanks, DLC

 * That really depends upon what you’ve already done. Have you hacked any core scripts
   or your theme?

 * Hi, and thanks for the quick response,
 * I’ve done a custom menu so I can have a static front page, plus extensive plugin
   work (50+ plugins, not all activated yet), including 15 widgets, in use now.
 * The problems I had early on were bad themes, a virtual parade of bad themes.
   They locked up (first one took 2 months for someone to respond on the Forums
   with the way to unlock it!), they were corrupt, they didn’t live up to the glorious
   descriptions, and the last one, before the one I have now, gave me a virus (a
   bogus Yahoo search screen took over WP).
 * Then, THIS theme sent me to the Forum, too, first for the custom menu, and later
   because the widgets weren’t showing up on the page.
 * So, you can see I’m really skittish about having MORE problems, especially where
   I’m not even officially in business yet, or even done loading content!
 * Thanks,

 * What theme are you currently using?

 * Weaver II.
 * **Only now I have a bigger problem.

    That virus I told you about, with the
   bogus Yahoo search screen? It’s back so I’m dead in the water and can’t access
   a single thing. Now, this virus doesn’t affect the rest of my computer … only
   WP! When you look, you probably won’t see the Yahoo screen … my husband didn’t
   when he looked, but he was locked out of the program, just as I was.
 * PLEASE FIX IT!

 * This **your** site. We cannot fix anything on it. Have you tried:
 * – deactivating **all** plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works,
   re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).
 * – switching to the Twenty Eleven theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.
 * – [resetting the plugins folder](http://codex.wordpress.org/FAQ_Troubleshooting#How_to_deactivate_all_plugins_when_not_able_to_access_the_administrative_menus.3F)
   by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause
   problems.

 * OK, let’s go back to the original issue – (quote) … _Please, to avoid nasty surprises,
   and a lot of rework, just exactly what will I lose if I do these upgrades? And,
   what can I do to avoid the inevitable nasty surprises?_ (end quote)
 * I’m not sure what’s going on here in regards to that bogus Yahoo search screen.
   Something is really strange … It seems like my computer burped or something and
   that bogus Yahoo screen showed up – and buggered up WP to the point where it
   was useless. Then, I noticed my resources were low, so I did a restart, and then
   had a _lot_ of trouble getting Firefox back up … but, long story short … everything
   seems to be fine again, including WP, although the backup program (BackWPup)
   got buggered up, so I’ll have to reload that, only this time, I’ll set it for
   daily, rather than weekly.
 * I’m not a techie – I’m a 64 year old retiree. I do very well _inside_ programs,
   but outside … as in code, or HTML, or delving into GoDaddy’s servers … scares
   me to death.
 * So we took a little detour and I have to figure that out somehow, so, as I said,
   let’s go back to the original issue – upgrades.
 * Thanks – DLC

 * I don’t know what you mean by “hacked any core scripts or your theme.”
 * As I said, I did a custom menu and I’ve done plugins including widgets and other
   added stuff.

 * Then the upgrade won’t touch your theme or your plugins.

 * AH-HA!!!!
 * I just saw on the news … GoDaddy was hacked by ‘Anonymous’ this afternoon … THAT’S
   what happened to me!!!
 * OK, I can scratch that issue!!

 * Um, ‘won’t touch’??
 * So, I can go and click the ‘upgrade’ button on both the WP program and the theme
   without worries of losing anything in the process … it will be seamless and harmless.
 * *deep shaky breath*
 * OK, if you’re sure …
 * Thanks, DLC

 * > ‘won’t touch’??
 * Correct. We cannot vouch that your theme will work post upgrade (unless you’re
   using an unedited version of Twenty Ten or Twenty Eleven) or that each & every
   one of your plugins won’t cause any problems (with the exception of Akismet)
   but we can guarantee that they won’t be touched by a core upgrade.
 * And, of course, you should always backup your site’s database before attempting
   any upgrade.

 * The only thing I’ve done to Weaver II is the custom menu (plus the plugins).
   Should I turn off the plugins before I upgrade (either/or)?
 * I’m thinking of upgrading to Weaver II Pro – will that be problematic?
 * Thanks, DLC

 * Ideally, yes. The re-activate them one at a time.
 * > will that be problematic?
 * You’d be better off asking that on the Weaver forums: [http://wpweaver.info/forum/](http://wpweaver.info/forum/)

 * There are a couple of plugins that go NUTS when you deactivate them – all sorts
   of big boxes at the top of the screen, usually in either pink/red, or at the
   very least, bright yellow/black, screeching at you in bold print about how XYZ
   Plugin has been deactivated and now needs to be reconfigured. The plugin screen
   lights up like a Christmas tree.
 * Thanks for the link – if I decide to go to Weaver II Pro, I will definitely check
   with them.
 * It’s all that I’ve been through #$%@ with this website – and I’m not even done
   with the content … **NO MORE SURPRISES!! _PLEASE!!_** LOL
 * Thanks, DLC
