Try:
– switching to the Twenty Twelve theme by renaming your current theme’s folder inside wp-content/themes and adding “-old” to the end of the folder name using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides.
– resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin.
– re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.
– running the upgrade manually via wp-admin/upgrade.php
It won’t let me change the name of Twenty Twelve theme, by saying “550 /www.tackonauts.com/web/content/wp-content/themes/twentytwelve: No such file or directory.”
I’m backing up everything just in case first. But you said replace everything except wp-content with a new download from wordpress?
Re-upload a fresh, unpacked, copy of the Twenty Twelve folder to wp-content/themes using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides.
http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/twentytwelve
okay, so I replaced twenty twelve with a new twenty twelve and added -old to the end of the file.
I also went to wordpress.org and downloaded the newest form of wordpress and uploaded/replaced everything but wp-content.
I don’t quite understand how to reset my plugins, I am using cyberduck, if that’s any help.
What I did do is refresh my we-admin page, and it still shows just white, however the actual website still works.
So I should download phpMyAdmin first, I gather? Where should I put these files?
No. Your hosts should be able to point you towards their Phpmyadmin or a similar database management tool.
Or reset your plugins folder via FTP or the file manager provided in your host’s control panel.
Via FTP or your host’s file manager, navigate to the wp-contents folder (directory)
Via FTP or your host’s file manager, rename the folder “plugins” to “plugins.hold”
Login to your WordPress administration menus (/wp-admin)
Via FTP or your host’s file manager, rename “plugins.hold” back to “plugins”
I renamed plugins to plugins.hold, and now the wp-admin works. almost afraid to rename it again
Well – at least you’re making progress. We now know that it’s a plugin issue. 🙂
All of the plugins should have been deactivated, so renaming the plugins-hold folder back to plugins should just give you your list of previously installed plugins back again. If so, you can them start activating them one at a time – checking the site carefully after each reactivation. I’d suggest starting with Akismet and then Jetpack (if you have those).
At some point, the site will break again but this time, you should know which plugin is responsible. so FTP back into your site (or use whatever file management application your host provides) & rename that plugin’s folder inside wp-content/plugins to deactivate it again.
You know what I bet it was, is that a few of my plugins needed updates too, I noticed as I reactivated them.
You are a genius! wp-admin is back and working properly, and my site still looks fine. I appreciate all your help so promptly. 🙂
