Support » Fixing WordPress » Upgrade WP 3.3.1 to 4.8

  • I have a client still using WP 3.3.1. Have spoken numerous times about the need to upgrade the CMS, but that hasn’t happened yet.

So, he’s still at 3.3.1. What is the best course to take to upgrade him to 4.8? I know the DB will need to migrate, be processed. Right?

Help. Want to get him to the “one-click” upgrade options so his site is secure moving forward.

The normal recommended way to do this is to do upgrades a version of two at a time. Jumping from 3.x to 4.8 in one go could very possibly be a recipe for disaster depending on what plugins, theme, etc are being used.

So the way to do it is not one-step. In fact the proper way to do it will take many steps. It’s a loop really…

    1. Backup all of the sites files and the database
    2. Manually update to a version one or two points higher then teh current version (eg: 3.3 to 3.5)
    3. Check that everything still works and youhaven’t broken things horribly
    4. Go back to step 1 and repeat until you’re up to around 4.5 or 4.6 and you should be fine to do the final automatic upgrade from there
