    Dear all,
    First I am new here and I google/Forums for answers but didn’t find + hope I am in the right place..
    I am trying to renew my friend’s old website. She has WordPress 3.2.1.
    But when I want to upgrade to WordPress 5.2.2 it say “You cannot update because WordPress 5.2.2 requires PHP version 5.6.20 or higher. You are running version 5.4.16.”
    I tried to contact her Server (digitalocean) but they don’t have support, so I talked with Domain (Papaki.gr) and only thing is to buy new SSL for the website.
    1. Is there other way to upgrade?
    2. She is using theme1439 and we want to change background color (from black to white) but failed (tried plugin “SiteOrigin CSS” and some others or tried custom CSS, maybe it is relevant to the upgrade??
    Thank you in advance!

    Hi there,

    It is not a simple reply here.

    1. Is there other way to upgrade?

    I just took a look into your website. I can see it is using flash which is an old technology.

    My recommendation here is start a new website from the beginning. You could just create a new website copying and pasting the content. Here you can see some great themes: https://wordpress.org/themes/browse/featured/

    2. She is using theme1439 and we want to change background color (from black to white) but failed (tried plugin “SiteOrigin CSS” and some others or tried custom CSS, maybe it is relevant to the upgrade??

    You could try using this CSS (change the “blue” to your desired color):

    main {
        background-color: blue !important;
    }

    But I recommend what I just said above.

    This has nothing to do with SSL.

    Digital Ocean just provides servers. Your or someone else has system admin rights on that server and you need to update PHP to a newer version. How you do that depends on which distro of Linux you’re using and how you installed it.

    Thank you Felipe Loureiro dos Santos,
    I have tried the CSS you wrote but the “Black” color didn’t change.
    I tried other themes like koksijde By erikdmitchell + Astra By Brainstorm Force + Hestia By Themeisle = all gave me blank page.
    The problem is deep I know. But what cause it? The server PHP? The SSL? if I will upgrade the server + SSL I know I could upgrade WP and maybe issue will solved..??
    I am trying for now to avoid it, if not I will..
    Thanks again,
    Kruvi

    @kruvi, in case you really decide update, so please get a backup and you won’t lose your website in case something happens: https://wordpress.org/support/article/wordpress-backups/

    Sure. That is why I was saying about going from scratch. It is a huge update. 😉

    As @sterndata said: It is not SSL. It might be your PHP version, theme/plugin version or theme/plugin conflict.

    Felipe Loureiro dos Santos – I already did 😉 thanks.

    Steve Stern – Ok now make sense, but I didn’t understand the “depends on which distro of Linux you’re using and how you installed it.” – Do you mean I need to log/sign in to digitalocean and try from there??

    I think the best and easy solution is to switch server with secure site SSL, I got an offer from our Domain and they will do all the work and all Data will be saved.

    Thanks guys

    Are you sure her Digital Ocean account has no support? I don’t know but I’d think they would have excellent support.

    Your domain registrar, Papaki.gr, can’t help you with a hosting issue at Digital Ocean.

    Your other options are to move the website to another host, hire someone to possibly upgrade your PHP version, upgrade that PHP yourself, or consider installing the upgrade to the earlier WordPress version 4.9.10 which should be good and still run with your current PHP. This plugin is supposed to help with that upgrade and control that process.

    https://wordpress.org/plugins/stops-core-theme-and-plugin-updates/

    I’d still rather have the upgraded PHP version!

    There’s some discussion here about installing 4.9.10 including a bit of code to stop the further update nag and there’s another plugin there to help control that update process further if you wish.

    https://wordpress.org/support/topic/wordpress-4-9-10-update/

    I figure when all is said and done you’ll probably just do the manual update to 4.9.10.
