Sorry. I’m not a techy so please excuse me if this is really noddy.
Auto upgrade to version 5 failed. I followed the request to run the update again.
This update seemed to stall. I left it for 8+hour before refreshing page then bombed out with an error message. Logged out then logged back in again and now I’m getting the following errors:-

Warning: Cannot modify header information – headers already sent by (output started at /home/changedi/public_html/wp/wp-includes/rest-api/endpoints/class-wp-rest-themes-controller.php:1) in /home/changedi/public_html/wp/wp-login.php on line 423

My guess would be a theme issue especially as it hasn’t been updated since June and doesn’t look very active support wise:

    https://wordpress.org/support/theme/mantra

Might be worth switching to one of the default WP themes and see if that stops the error.

If it does you can then switch it back and try contacting the developer via their website although it is a free one of their themes.

Your files are corrupted or somehow modified.

Get a fresh copy of the WordPress ZIP, and replace the files in your install with the correct, clean ones.

Also, if you’ve never done the manual update before, be sure to leave your wp-content folder untouched.

Be careful when you come to copying the wp-content directory. You should make sure that you only copy the files from inside this directory, rather than replacing your entire wp-content directory. This is where your themes and plugins live, so you will want to keep them. https://codex.wordpress.org/Upgrading_WordPress#Manual_Update

    Thanks guys.
Pete – I can’t get into my site to disable Mantra and use a default theme (unless anyone can advise me how to get round the errors I’m experiencing. I don’t know how to do it outside of the WP environment

    Similarly – Sam/Paul – I wouldn’t know which files to copy!

I have only used WP in its native environment and have very little experience of working directly with php (etc) files.

    All of them.

    Follow the manual update instructions:

    https://codex.wordpress.org/Upgrading_WordPress#Manual_Update

Most web hosting providers do routine backups, you might be able to ask them to help revert your site to where it was before failed update.

If they refuse to help, then follow the instruction linked above.

Are you not seeing the wp-login.php page?

I can see your website and login page fine at my end.

So you may need to clear your browser cache or try viewing your website/login in a (incognito/private depending what browser you use) window.

Here’s the view of your website and login page at my end:

    Thank you all so much.
I’m now in – clearing the cache seemed to be the thing (I thought I’d done so but obviously not thoroughly enough!
