 * Hi – I am receiving multiple requests from WordPress to update. I have tried
   many times and keep getting error messages. It keeps telling me automatic updates
   have failed to complete. Or could not create directory. Cannot update plug-ins
   or themes.
 * What steps are needed?
 * Thank you for your help. Kathy

 * – then try **MANUAL** updating. Download a fresh copy of the WordPress .zip file
   to your computer, unzip it, and use that to copy up all files and folders EXCEPT
   the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory. You may need to delete
   the old copies of files & folder on your server before uploading the new ones.
   Read the [Manual Update ](http://codex.wordpress.org/Updating_WordPress#Manual_Update)
   directions first.
    – **If you haven’t already done, always backup everything (
   including your database) before doing any actions, just in case something really
   goes wrong.**

 * I’ll have to try this. I’m learning as I go – my former assistant set this up!
   This is my work web-site so I’m a bit worried but backing up will take care of
   that. Thanks very much!

 * Had the same problem going from 4.2 to 4.2.1
    This helped: [https://wordpress.org/support/topic/cant-update-from-42-to-421?replies=11#post-6886150](https://wordpress.org/support/topic/cant-update-from-42-to-421?replies=11#post-6886150)(
   Backing up your database and FTP files is a good idea before any update, always)

 * I worked on this over weekend with no success. But found out my version is older
   so missing multiple upgrades. When I have time will get on phone with tech support.
 * Thanks everyone who replied!

 * To upgrade to the latest 4.2.1, my suggestion is incremental updating: [https://codex.wordpress.org/Upgrading_WordPress_-_Extended_Instructions](https://codex.wordpress.org/Upgrading_WordPress_-_Extended_Instructions)

 * Thank you Tara – looks intimidating but will print out and go step by step.
