Trying the auto install from GoDaddy stalled and failed. I’m wondering if it could have anything to do with the fact that I changed the url by removing “/wordpress” at the end of it. At GoDaddy the url retains the old address. Anyone else experience this? Or could the problem be somewhere else? There was no error message, only the stalling.

I’m wondering if it could have anything to do with the fact that I changed the url by removing “/wordpress” at the end of it.

Possibly. Did you follow the method outlined on Giving_WordPress_Its_Own_Directory?

    Hi esmi,
    Yes I did.

I tried the install again today and just left it uploading, to go do other stuff, and when I finally returned I did get an error message:

    Server Error:
A general server error has occurred.

Seems like a pretty generic error message. Also, I thought I’d had the latest wordpress version but didn’t. I was still at 2.8. Not sure if that makes a difference. The thought of changing the url again isn’t a pleasant thought since I’m not really good at this coding stuff and I remember how confused I was changing in the first place.

At godaddy there doesnt seem to be a way of changing the url. I’m not even sure if I should. I dont want to mess anything up.

Do you think I should call GoDaddy and just ask them about updating the older address they have in their system? I would have thought that when I originally changed it, it would have changed all the way through to GD. And I’m not even sure if I should attempt a manual upgrade.

Confused as usual and any more help understanding this would be great.

Can I just clarify – are you upgrading or installing?

Um I thought I was upgrading. I’m also just seeing now that godaddy says I have 2.8 but my dashboard says I have 2.9. No wonder I’m confused!

In my dashboard there’s a link to upgrade but the link leads to a page with an error message: ‘You are not allowed to call this page directly.’That’s why I went to go daddy to update it. Should I not be doing that at godaddy but just through wordpress? Because I get that meassge, do I need to do a manual install?

My site is at Can you tell anything by looking at the view page source info?

I think you’ll have to do a manual upgrade in this case.

Thanks for the link, macmanx. I just wanted to conclude this thread by saying I’ve even contacted Go Daddy and they also said I would have to do a manual upgrade. I’ve procrastinated long enough, but I’m going to give it a try. Thanks again for your responses.

    You’re welcome!

If this thread is still relevant, I came up with a solution. To enable automatic upgrades on godaddy:
    -first go to hosting control
-then to file manager (you will see a list of the contents of your html files)
-check the root folder check box
-select permissions on the menu bar above
-check the write (enable) check box

There you go. You can now auto-update your WP!

    It’s still relevant to me!

Thank you for this info. I’ll try it for the next upgrade. I’ve been able to upgrade it manually, but I don’t like to. If this is an easier way, I’m all for it!

    Thanks again!
