 * Hi, I have been using the free version of updraftplus for many years without
   issue. Today I discovered that my hosting company here in the UK have taken the
   decision to not allow the use of your plugin due to old backups taking up server
   space. They have disabled the ability to set the file permissions on the updraft
   folder to make it writeable. I tried to set up remote storage on Google drive
   but (I think) the zip file is created locally before being uploaded and then
   deleted. So effectively, it seems I cannot use your plugin any longer. Is there
   something I have missed? Can I get it to work without access to the updraft folder
   in wp-content?
 * Thanks Ray

 * Hi Ray,
 * Thank you for your message.
 * You are correct that UpdraftPlus first creates the backup locally in the wp-content/
   updraft folder before uploading it to remote storage and then deleting it (if
   local deletion is enabled). Because of that, the plugin still requires write
   access to the UpdraftPlus folder.
 * If your host has completely blocked write access to that directory, then unfortunately
   UpdraftPlus will not be able to function correctly, even with remote storage
   enabled.
 * I’ll report this feedback to our team as well, as more hosts seem to be applying
   these kinds of restrictions.
 * Kind regards,
   Bryle

 * Hi Bryle, thanks for getting back to me. After many support tickets back and
   forth, I managed to resolve the issue with my hosting company. The problems are
   caused by automated checks to determine plugins that hold too much space on their
   servers. If detected, their system automatically changes the folder permissions
   to block writing access.
 * I was told the threshold for triggering this is 100mb or larger in a folder.
   I managed to get them to change the folder permissions back to writable and re-
   assured them that the backups are deleted once they have been uploaded to the
   remote storage. They have agreed to the folder being writable but the trigger
   will still take effect if the folder exceeds 100mb. Hopefully their automated
   scan won’t run at the same time a backup is being created.
 * Thanks Ray

 * Hi Ray,
 * Thanks for the update. I’m glad you were able to work things out with your hosting
   provider.
 * To help avoid triggering their automated storage checks in the future, you could
   try reducing the split archive size in UpdraftPlus to something smaller, such
   as 25 MB. This reduces the size of each temporary backup archive created during
   the backup process.
 * Also, to minimize backups being stored locally for long periods, it’s best to
   connect a remote storage destination (such as Google Drive, Dropbox, S3, etc.)
   and enable the option to delete local backups after successful remote upload.
 * If you don’t mind sharing, which hosting provider is this with? We’ve seen similar
   automated storage restrictions from some hosts recently.
 * Best Wishes,
   Bryle

 * The backups are working ok at the moment. I will look at your suggestion.
 * The company is [https://www.unlimitedwebhosting.co.uk/](https://www.unlimitedwebhosting.co.uk/)
   I have been with them for many years and they provide a good service. This is
   the first issue I’ve ever had with any site hosted with them and we managed to
   resolve it so I’m happy.
 * Thanks
 * Ray
