Wow. I just updated WOW slider on a client site, and their frontpage slideshow disappeared. Now I get a “No such file or directory…. /public_html/wp-content/plugins/wowslider/api.php on line 177” and there’s 3 slideshows in the backend, one with defaults from the update, and two that are empty. Site here:

    Any help is appreciated.

I have just checked your page:

There are no WOWSlider files on your server. Please upload “wowslider.zip” module again.

Well, the files were most definitely there, because I downloaded wowslider/api.php before posting here to see if I could see anything out of wack. But no matter, I deleted them, and manually uploaded (rather than using the plugin installation), and still nothing. The old slideshow is still gone. Wowslider is there, but the only slide show is the default images, that is made when the plugin is uploaded. Other than that, nothing.

    * WOWSlider plugin should be updated automatically when you upload a module generated with a newer version. So, manually updating is not required and existing sliders will not disappear.
    * If you want to update the plugin manually, you should deactivate it, then update it and after that activate it again. So, your plugin will be updated and existing sliders will not disappear.
    * If existing sliders disappeared, unfortunately it’s impossible to restore them easy. The fastest and the simplest way is to remove sliders that don’t work and add them again using menu item WOWSlider ->Add New in WordPress.

Yeah. Well, the automatic update nuked the files on it’s own. Everything else was just triage. The good news is, Nivo Slider is easy to implement, without even using their for-pay plug-in.

That the WOWslider plugin stores the image files in its own directory seems to be flirting with disaster. Anything goes wrong with the plugin (as above), and the files are gone….

Actually, files of WOWSlider plugin and files of sliders are stored into separate folders. Files of WOWSlider plugin are stored into “wp-content\plugins\wowslider\” folder and files of sliders are into “wp-content\uploads\wow-slider-plugin\” folder.
Existing sliders will disappear if you delete a plugin only. They will not disappear after plugin’s update. If your sliders disappeared, it means that you did something wrong.
