Hi,
What messages did you see?
To take your site out of maintenance mode, use FTP to remove the file “.maintenance” in your WP site’s root directory. Your FTP program may have a “show hidden files” setting needed to show this file.
Best wishes,

Good morning David! My site has returned to normal (after about five minutes), so I am all good there. I will try and install Updraft again and will post errors if they appear again. I did see the same errors (this morning) on another website I updated, but the website was not broken after.
Hi,
What were the errors? It’s likely that your web hosting account is full, or that the server they’re on is having some other generic problem… when WP updates a plugin, all it does is unzip the files of the new plugin, and copy them over the old one. The only thing likely to go wrong with that is if there’s a disk-write issue (which could be due to disk space, web hosting account space, or similar things).

Hi David, This is the message “Warning: Illegal string offset ‘new_version’ in /home/folder-name/public_html/website.com/wp-content/themes/genesis/lib/functions/upgrade.php on line 126′
Hi,
That message is coming from your theme, Genesis… that information is in the part highlighted in bold:
/home/folder-name/public_html/website.com/wp-content/themes/genesis/lib/functions/upgrade.php
Best wishes,
David
