    Hi,
In my dashboard, I updated the functions.php file with a few lines of new code. I then saved or updated the file (still in dashboard), but it never reappeared after attempting to update. I waited… but nothing. I finally closed out and tried to access it, but nothing at all comes up. My website appears to be gone. I’m a newbie at this, so how do I get it back?
    Thanks

Use FTP to access the functions.php file in your theme then remove the lines you added in to cause the issue. Send it back up via FTp and try again.

You’ll need to use FTP (or other file manager your host uses) to deactivate that theme.

You can also download a new copy of your theme to your local computer and using FTP replace that functions.php file with a new copy.

As your hosts for help (if you need it) with FTP or file manager, or see:

And BTW, you should not be modifying theme files – but instead using a Child Theme for any changes – see:

Thank you all, but I am still confused. I didn’t update the file through my FTP, my dashboard crashed before anything happened (at least I think it did). I’m not sure what I need to do next.

Yes, we know that, but the point is that the only way to fix this is by using FTP or other file manager access. Since you cannot access via the dashboard, there is no other way to get into the site files.

Right, but they’re saying that you should re-upload the original functions.php file through the FTP to get your site back up.

I have the same problem… when I place the url of my site on the browser add bar, nothing shows. no error, no nothing.

I messed up my functions.php file hoping to add adsense code to it. i may have erroneously done something.

I use cpanel for file manager.. I have nada idea how to do this.

How can I have my site up and running again?

    Thanks!
