Support » Fixing WordPress » Update WP blog as secondary part of existing site

  • My client has a website that was created using Coffee Cup. A secondary part of the site is her WordPress blog installed in a sub-directory. She is running version 2.85 and would like to update to 3.1.2.

I am unable to run automatic update and have tried a number of times to update manually without success. I am new fairly new to WordPress but have knowledge of HTML and CSS.

I thought if I was able to at least update her theme from Kubrick to 2010, I might be able to update, however I am unable to install the theme and get this message: Unable to locate WordPress Content directory (wp-content).

Currently all of her WP installation files are in the sub-directory.
There are no files in the root directory. Do I need to copy the WordPress core files to the root, or the entire installation? We do not want the blog to exist in the site root. Step by Step directions would be greatly appreciated!

  • You will need to do manual upgrades in increments..
2.85 to 2.9 to 3.0 to current version.(someone can correct me if i am wrong)
After each upgrade to a full backup of database and an xml file.
Then try to use the auto update link ..

You should download a copy of her wp-config.php file too.
You back up the database from php myadmin on her hosting account, or use a plugin.
