    Hi
I have been asked to work on a website written in WordPress 3.5.2 and never updated.
Can I just go ahead and update it to 4.7.2 without any consequences?
WordPress thinks it is up to date and is not suggesting any updates are rerquired.
It is not live but it is an ecommerce site.
    Thanx

There are two ways to do this, the long and stepwise manual method and the Hail Mary pass. I’d go for the 2nd one.

    1) Make a complete backup of your site. Export the database via phpmyadmin and FTP all the files to your PC and put them someplace safe.

    2) Disable all plugins.

    3) Do a manual update of WordPress. https://codex.wordpress.org/Updating_WordPress#Manual_Update

    4) If the site comes up, switch to the twentyseventeen theme and go to the Dashboard’s update page.

    5) Update themes and plugins.

    6) One at a time, enable plugins.

    7) Switch back to the original (but hopefully updated) theme.

Thanks Steve. A very well and thought through and logical process. I don’t understand though why WordPress itself doesn’t realise that an update is required, it does usually these days. Maybe when 3.5.2 was current all updates had to be done manually.
    Thankx
