 * I recently updated WordPress, using the automatic update option, and just discovered
that my index.php page had been overwritten! My WordPress blog is on a separate
page (news.php), and my index.php page was not managed through WordPress. Is
this normal after an update? Are there other files that might get overwritten
   as well?

 * Is this not something that anyone else has ever experienced?

 * Files which have changed between your existing installation and the new one will
   be overwritten.
 * index.php is a WordPress file so it’s normal that it’s replaced with the proper
   version when updated.
 * If you don’t want your WordPress install to be your landing site, install it
in a subdirectory and link to it from your main page.

 * It doesn’t seem that that ought to be the case, but I suppose one could argue
that I’m using it incorrectly by having the base address for my blog be a news.
php page, rather than a news/ subdirectory. I suppose I’ll just have to accept
that I have to either replace the index.php file with my own file after every
update or move the WordPress stuff into a subdirectory. (Any pointers to instructions
   on doing the latter?)
