On the right hand side, there’s a section entitled “Update Notifications”, where you can opt to receive notifications for new releases of phpBB. Is there anything like that for WordPress? I could subscribe to an RSS feed for the blog, but, frankly, the only thing I’m interested in are update notifications. I, for the most part, couldn’t care less about the latest features being worked on – I just want to know when I need to upgrade and that’s it.

When joining this forum, there was a “Subscribe to announcement list (a few messages a year)” checkbox. Is that what I want?

  • you get told about upgrades that are available on every page of your wp-admin/ area, assuming you have actually upgraded to a version that has that implemented.

So, basically, you’re saying that I need to visit wp-admin/ every day? Because, right now, I don’t. Probably do it like once every three months. I’m not a particularly active blogger nor do I get very many comments that aren’t spam.

Or maybe you’re suggesting that I just don’t need to upgrade during those three months, even if updates are made available? If I don’t look at my blog, maybe attackers won’t, either! Yay!!!

if you dont intend to visit your blog, well than, you probably dont want to rely on that to get notifications. 🙂
