    Hi there,
So my webhost is finally kicking us of off php 5.6 and i need to upgrade an old site that has galleries from NextGen version 1.9.13.
Can i safely upgrade to a current version of NextGen without losing all my old galleries?

I’m currently running wordpress 3.8.3 on PHP 5.6. I’m going to upgrade to wordpress 5.1 and PHP 7.2 and, hopefully, the current NextGen gallery.

Has anyone does this successfully? i’m worried it will all turn to custard.

    cheers,
    paul

Well…. as suspected something is broken upon upgrade.
NextGen sees the album and gallery information, but no images are showing at all.

    Wordpress 5.1
    PHP 7.2
    NextGen 3.1.7

Not sure how to get everything re-connected and viewing properly. 🙁
Here are the 2 albums with galleries:

When i use the NextGen manager in the dashboard is shows gallery, albums and etc, and says there are images in each one, but nothing shows when you click on galleries to edit/view.

    Any help appreciated!

    Hi @pnelson7428,

We are really sorry but we wouldn’t be able to guarantee that your galleries will remain intact and fully functional after upgrading from such an old version of NextGen Gallery plugin. There were like 2 major updates in NextGen 2.x and NextGen 3.x that changed the way we are working with the shortcodes that are inserted in the pages.

What I would suggest is to try to clear the images’ cache from “Gallery -> Other Options -> Miscellaneous” in hope that this will bring back the thumbnails.

If this step wouldn’t help you will need to either edit all the pages and reinsert your galleries and albums or switch back to the plugin version you were previously using by downloading it from here https://wordpress.org/plugins/nextgen-gallery/advanced/ ( please note that we wouldn’t be able to offer support in case of using older NextGen Gallery versions and it also may miss some new functional and security updates )

    Sorry for the inconveniences,
    Mihai

    Hi thanks for the advice…
I’ve tried your suggestions. But even creating a new albulm and re-inserting the galleries and adding it to the page again, it doesn’t seem to fix the issue. And when you look at the page source on the gallery page, it doesn’t seem to be pointing to any images/directory structure that exists? Is this because the table/database structure in the new versions is completely different?

The new links and img src don’t make sense,,, eg:
    http://illuminatedvagabond.com/index.php/nggallery/paul-new?page_id=871

Whereas the old linking/php convention seems to work, at least to pull some images:
    http://illuminatedvagabond.com/?page_id=871&album=1&gallery=40

BTW I am able to see all galleries and images in the management panels.

    Hi @pnelson7428m,

I am not actually aware of any database changes that would make the uploaded galleries not usable. Can you please let us know how you are currently inserting the new shortcode, what are the shortcode parameters and the album structure?

    Thanks in advance,
    Mihai

    Album settings:
    album is named.
    album has preview image assigned
    page linked to: not linked.

Inserted into page as extended album and a simple version, neither works.
New album was created and galleries re-added to it:
    http://illuminatedvagabond.com/?page_id=871

Galleries seem to work fine when inserted into post:
    http://illuminatedvagabond.com/?p=1598
and the nextgen widget is also working fine from sidebars

Here is the shortcode for that page, but i’ve tried mutliple ways with no luck:
    [ngg src=”albums” ids=”3″ display=”basic_extended_album” override_thumbnail_settings=”1″ thumbnail_width=”240″ thumbnail_height=”160″]

I’ve also tried the basic 2019 theme with no other plugins running with no luck.
It seems the problem is isolated to the generation of albums only.

    cheers,
    Paul

    Hi @pnelson7428

Let’s first check if NextGen Gallery currently works on your site.
1.- Test if you can create a simple gallery.
2.- Insert that gallery inside a post or page.
3.- Test if that gallery works.
4.- Do the same process with albums.

We need to know if these options are currently working with regular and new galleries. Please, keep us posted.

Next, I would like you to check your “Permalink” settings double.
Could you please use a “Post name” instead of the “Plain” default configuration?

    Does the problem persist?
Please, feel free to write us back.

    Thanks!

First thing i did was check Permalink settings it set to Post name.
Ok, so i made some new galleries and new albums and they worked ok.
Then I checked the old galleries/albums. They were starting to work, but not quite.

So i manually went through every gallery and picked different thumbnail image and ensured they were not linked to any pages (some were).
Then i created new pages and new albums based on the updated galleries.
Everything was then working except 2 galleries that had special characters in the names which was messing up the link structure so I duplicated the galleries using simple names and re-inserted into the new albums.

NOW I THINK EVERYTHING IS WORKING!
I think it must have been a combination of Permalinks and the old data from the old version. But ‘touching’ each one and making sure all settings were correct after changing the Permalink setting has seemed to fix it all!

    Many thanks for your patience!

    Hi @pnelson7428,

Thanks for letting us know and great to hear that refreshing the preview images and the links helped to figure out the problem.
