I have repeatedly FTP’d to my 1and1.com webspace and deleted the . maintenance file from the WP root directory and tried again, but it never works. I have read many posts that talk about deleting the .maintenance file. I also read a post that mentioned that this is a hidden file. Even after ensuring I could view hidden files, there was no .maintenance file to delete. I also saw in another forum that you should delete the “upgrade” folder that resides under wp_content. I did that also…same problem.
