 * An automatic update of my theme failed; so I uploaded them theme manually. I
   am still getting a message telling me the update failed and to try again. How
   do I get rid of this?
 * Thanks in advance.

 * I’m just kicking this up the list since no one has provided an answer.

 * Where is the error message appearing? What is the error?

 * It’s appearing on the dashboard – it’s just saying:
 * “An automated WordPress update has failed to complete – please attempt the update
   again now.”
 * But as I said, I updated the theme manually and when I click on update, it says
   that nothing needs to be updated. However the above message refuses to go away.

 * The message is referring to the WordPress files, rather than a theme.

 * I’ll try uploading the WordPress 3.0 files again and see if it cures it.

 * I’ve downloaded WordPress 3.0 – uploaded all the files, again the same message.
 * The context was that I was upgrading a theme as per its instructions, however
   it timed out. I upgraded the theme manually, but the message simply refuses to
   go away.

 * Any ideas?

 * I figured it out: when an upgrade fails, a .maintenance file appears in the main
   directory – delete it and the message goes away.

 * I’ve got it too, having upgraded to WP 3.0. I had a spot of plug-ins giving me
   Error 500s and having sorted all those out, I’ve got a dashboard that tells me
   that I’m running WordPress 3.0, yet just above it, under the top nav bar, it
   reads “An automated WordPress update has failed to complete – please attempt
   the update again now.”
 * I don’t feel like clicking that link just yet as i don’t want to go through all
   the plug-in drama again : /

 * ha, yes, that gets rid of it 🙂

 * I have this problem trying to auto-upgrade the twenty-ten theme from version
   1.0 to 1.1. I have repeatedly FTP’d to my 1and1.com webspace and deleted the .
   maintenance file from the WP root directory and tried again, but it never works.
   Tech support at 1and1.com says that it’s a WordPress problem.
    — update: problem
   solved after I tried [renaming the plugins folder](http://wordpress.org/support/topic/413390).

 * I’m reviving this thread. I have had the same message
 * > An automated WordPress update has failed to complete – please attempt the update
   > again now.
 * However, I can not find any file named .maintenance in my fiels.
 * I just upgraded to 3.0.1. I have searched the site completely for a file of that
   name and it is not there.
 * Any other suggestions?
 * Thank-you

 * Same here…no hidden .maintenance file. It would be nice to track down the source
   of this anomaly…

 * I have run into the same problem with the failed update message. I have read
   many posts that talk about deleting the .maintenance file. I also read a post
   that mentioned that this is a hidden file. Even after ensuring I could view hidden
   files, there was no .maintenance file to delete. I also saw in another forum
   that you should delete the “upgrade” folder that resides under wp_content. I
   did that also…same problem.
