• On my WP admin page I see the error a message that the automated WP update failed.

BUT I also have the message that I DO have the latest version.

If I ignore this and try to “repupdate”, it fails.

On the other hand, my website seems to work perfectly. can any one please help?

    Thanks!

Autoupdating can fail for many reasons.

If auto updating fails, you may do MANUALLY updating. Download WordPress again and unzip it, and use that to copy up. Access your server via SFTP or FTP, or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel (consult your hosting provider’s documentation for specifics on these), and delete then replace your copies of everything on the server EXCEPT the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory with fresh copies from the download. This will effectively replace all of your core files without damaging your content and settings. (NOTE: do not delete the wp-content directory or your wp-config.php file). Please read the Manual Update directions first.

Backup: If you haven’t already done, always backup everything (including your database) before doing any actions, just in case something really goes wrong. You can never have enough backups! See https://wordpress.org/support/article/wordpress-backups/

You can also check the WordPress version at /wp-includes/version.php

Thank you for your reply. As usual in these cases, I may not have asked the question I wanted answered.

I have a message that my update failed. I also have a notice that I have the latest update and it indeed shows the latest version of WP is installed

The question is, which of these do I believe? Is this like a faulty car’s warning light? How else can you test whether I have the the latest version? To go through all the steps you kindly provide is, I’m afraid, a bit beyond my ken and error prone. I am especially reluctant to go this process if it is not necessary!

My website works perfectly and I am inclined to let well enough alone.

If you can provide any other info, then fine. In any case, thank you for your time once again.

I have a message that my update failed … it indeed shows the latest version of WP is installed

Is that “failed” message for WP core? OR, for a plugin update? OR for a theme update?

It would save everyone time if i can post a screen shot of the messages I see. Is this in any way possible?

If the “failed” message is from auto updating of WP core, then do a manual updating. See my previous reply for instructions.

If “failed message is for a plugin or theme, then you can also update theme manually.
    See these articles for instructions:
Try installing or upgrading the Plugin manually.
Try installing or upgrading the Theme manually.

Why do I have the message that I have the latest version installed?

Why is THAT in error and not the message that the update failed? That is my original question and one that is still not answered.

I cannot be the first one to experience this.
