* Hello,
* I get an error message when I try to update wordfence.
* An error occurred while updating Wordfence Security: The update cannot be installed
because we will be unable to copy some files. This is usually due to inconsistent
file permissions. tmp/configCache.php
* Please advise

* In your Wordfence Options, turning on “Disable config caching” — if the file
still exists after that (wp-content/plugins/wordfence/tmp/configCache.php), you
can remove it. If that was the only file blocking the update, it should work
after that. If not, let us know.

* I am getting the same error message and have turned on “Disable config caching”
I still can’t get it to update. I have no clue on how to remove the file.
* Please advise. Thank you

* I had the same error.
* I turned off config caching and I still got the error.
* I ssh’d in to the machine and manually deleted the file `/<wordpress root>/wp-
content/plugins/wordfence/tmp/configCache.php` and then re-ran plugin update.
Then it worked.

* Yup, same here. I disabled the option and used my file manager to delete that
one file. Update went through without a hitch after that.

* Thanks everyone for confirming the fix has worked for you.
* mudstompers: You can use FTP or your host’s file manager to remove the file.
If you haven’t done that before, you can go to your WordPress plugin list, deactivate
Wordfence, remove it from the site, then install it again. Your settings should
still be there, as long as you have not turned on the option to delete them.

* I got the new version by deleting wf, then reinstalling it. However I still cannot
run a scan. Please advise.

* When you try to run a scan, what happens? Does anything happen when you click
the button at all?
* There are some troubleshooting steps for scans that won’t start, that you can
follow, here:
[My scans aren’t starting](http://docs.wordfence.com/en/My_scans_aren't_starting._What_would_cause_that%3F)
* If this doesn’t help, if clicking the Scan button starts to show information
in the yellow boxes on the scan page, but then it gets stuck, can you post the
results from both boxes here? (If it’s long, you can use pastebin.com or a similar
service — please don’t paste more than about 10 lines here.)

* Deleting the configCache.php file worked for me. Thanks!
As a novice user of
WordPress, deleting a file that deep felt like doing neurosurgery on my own brain.
Nothing to it. Just drill a hole with the file manager, move the wordpress, plugins,
and cerebellum out of the way and take out the file. If anything goes wrong,
you won’t know it as your brain will shut down. Then you can work at the post
office without getting frustrated!

* Deleting the configCache.php file, /wp-content/plugins/wordfence/tmp/configCache.
php file
**AND** Disabling the WordFence>Diagnostics>Disable config caching
worked.
* The Disable config caching option is on the Diagnostics menu, the bottom of the
page in WordPress.
Click the Wordfence plugin settings menu option on the left-
hand side of the screen, then click the Diagnostics menu item. Scroll to the
bottom of the page and select the Disable config caching, save your changes and
install.
* You may want to re-enable the option after a successful installation.
