Update 5.6.1 breaks my website
-
Error message “ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS”. Disabling the plugin brings my site back up again. Would be grateful for a fix, it’s a great plugin.

Yes – same for me.
I’ve reverted to 5.5 and all fine again now.
Hi, thanks for using Force Login!
There was a “too many redirects” issue with version 5.6 in a Multisite install, but that should be resolved in version 5.6.1.
https://github.com/kevinvess/wp-force-login/issues/62#issuecomment-855436380
Can you confirm that you are using version 5.6.1 and give more detail about your install and any custom configurations?
Thanks!
Hi–
If you’re using a custom login URL, you will need to tell Force Login to bypass that page. See this support thread for more detail:
https://wordpress.org/support/topic/since-5-6-1-problem-with-custom-login-page/#post-14528727
Thanks!
Thanks
Yes my client had updated from 5.5 to 5.6.1 this morning and that’s when the site broke.
We are also using Theme My login which I think does try to redirect the user to /login that may be where the problem has arisen.
For now I think we will leave it on 5.5 as not on multisite anyway.
Thanks for the quick response!
Can you direct me to where I can get the 5.5 version? Same thing happened to me, using Theme my Login. Would like to get my site up.
You can download previous versions from this page:
https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-force-login/advanced/For those of you using the Theme My Login plugin, you can try adding the following filter to your site to bypass Force Login for your custom login URL:
/** * Bypass Force Login to allow for exceptions. * * @param bool $bypass Whether to disable Force Login. Default false. * @param string $visited_url The visited URL. * @return bool */ function my_forcelogin_bypass( $bypass, $visited_url ) { // Allow login screen if ( function_exists('tml_is_wp_login') && tml_is_wp_login() ) { $bypass = true; } return $bypass; } add_filter( 'v_forcelogin_bypass', 'my_forcelogin_bypass', 10, 2 );
(this is untested code)
Thanks Kevin,
Will I keep all my data if I delete the plugin and reinstall the 5.5 version?
Removing Force Login should not affect any data stored in your database. However, please backup your site before making any changes/updates to be safe.
Lastly, if you try adding the bypass filter I suggested, you shouldn’t need to downgrade Force Login.
I am getting too many redirects as well on several sites once I updated plugin.
Sites are not multi-site. I am on WP 5.7.2.
They also all use Theme My Login. They are using the standard /login location. I tried the filter you added in this thread, but that did not help.
I have turned off the plugin until you can resolve it.
Let me know what you may need from me to help you debug, Kevin.
Given the amount of feedback I’m getting about this issue, I’ve updated the plugin code to hopefully fix this issue.
Please download the latest development version from Github and let me know if this fixes your issue.
Thanks!
This totally broke my website. I spent hours going between 2 vendors before I tried restoring a backup.
Hi everyone–
I’ve released a new version which will hopefully help with this issue. Thanks!
