 * I missed the last plugin update and in the meantime WordPress has been updated
   to 4.0. Can I safely perform the update even though the plugin hasn’t been tested
   on 4.0?

   is safe to update NextGEN Gallery.
 * The “Compatible up to:” version is just read from a text string manually entered
   into the plugin’s readme.txt* file. We generally choose to update that value 
   when we release a new version of the plugin, it does not indicate the plugin 
   will have issues with the latest version of WordPress.
