    Hi,
I am new to WP and having created a site, have copied it to a new URL and re-set the URL on the settings page, but the same content appears irrespective of which url I go to and when I try to login to WP Admin on the original site to modify the old pages, I am automatically re-directed to the new one.

Can someone please advise me how to break the link between the two, so that I can run each independently. I would like to use one for development and the other as a live site.

    The sites are
    framlinghamfrench.co.uk (original/dev site)
    framfrench.co.uk (New live site)

Thank you for the link, unfortunately I can’t see anything in it which will solve my problem. I have moved my site and the new one appears to be working OK. The original one however seems to have also picked up the changes which I had made on the duplicate and I only seem to be able to access the new one through the dashboard.

Perhaps I should just remove all the WP files from the first site and make a new installation. I am concerned though as WP seems to generate so many files and folders and I am not sure what they all are. Is there a beginners guide to what all the files and folders are?

You also need to make a separate copy of the database. Sounds like you didn’t do that.

the new one appears to be working OK.

It’s not. It’s still pulling some content from the old site. Did you actually move this site or just change the domain name (incorrectly)?

I copied all the folders and contents (or thought I had) and assumed that included the database. What name would that have and where would I find it?

I think you need to review Moving_WordPress.

esmi, Thank you for that advice. I have looked at the article, and wish I had done so before I started, unfortunately I seem to have done things in the wrong order, copied the files, opened them and then changed the URL. Added to whihc I don’t know how to identify the database so do not know if that has been copied or not. Neither do I know if the files which I now need to repair are in the old domain or the new new one. I have used Filezilla to FTP copies of the wp-admin,wp-content and wp-includes folders from both old and new domains to my hard drive, but am not sure if I have the database.

If the old site is still running, I can only suggest that you scrap the new site and start again with the site move/duplication.

My difficulty is that I don’t know what is on which site, as the WP admin logon always seems to take me to the new site, but changes I make on that are reflected on the old site as well as the new one. However I have found the database on the old site.

The database is not part of the files you’ve copied. If you host provides phpmyadmin, you can manage it there.

The logon always takes you to the new site because you’ve changed the URL settings, which are stored in the database. Changes made are reflected on both sides because they’re getting data from the same database.

The wp-config.php file for both sites must point to different databases, or at least have a different prefix, for your sites to work correctly.

Do what esmi suggested and start again, but first you must follow the instructions on the link t-p has provided and change the URL back to your old site.

Thank you all for your advice. I now think I have the site and database transferred.
