    Hi Justin,

I use your “members” plugin, and I love it.

I wanted to know if there’s a way to create a kind of “unpowered” admin role. There are certain plugins that only allow admins to configure/setup them, but I don’t wan to grant admin access to customers.

    Is there a way?

    Thanks in advance.

That’s entirely based on the specific plugin. Members merely provides the ability to assign capabilities to roles. What those capabilities do is outside the control of Members.

Essentially, for a plugin to allow what you’re asking for, they’d need to provide a custom capability, which you could manage with Members.

    Hi Justin,

Your answer is right, but that’s not my question.

The question is if, with your plugin, I can create a “kind of admin” user, but with not full access.

I’ve seen in the code of this kind of plugins that, directly, they’re looking for an “administrator” user/role. So, I was guessing if there was a way to create a administrator-like role, but without all the permissions. Just to bypass the “is administrator” code conditional.

    Thanks.

If there’s another plugin checking directly against the administrator role for permissions, that plugin is broken (except in some rare circumstances). Roles in WP are merely a method of grouping capabilities. Capabilities determine what a role and its users can do.

Plugins check against specific capabilities. So, if you built a plugin with an options page, you’d typically check the manage_options capability to determine whether the user has permission to manage options.

If you have a plugin that’s directly checking against the role, it’s far, far better to ask the plugin author to fix the problem. It’s broken and technically a security vulnerability.

But, you can clone the administrator role from the Users > Roles screen and name it anything you want. It’d have all the same caps as the administrator.

    Hi
I am very pleased with Members, it’s just what I need to create a simple member site.
But I have one problem: there are no user roles available in my profile, the list of roles simply is not there. I am an administrator, but I cannot choose other roles, which I want to. There are two other administrators – temporarily – and their profiles contain the list of roles. Do you know what the problem is here, and can it be corrected?
    Regards
