Support » Plugin: Restrict Content » Unfinished product.

  • I had high hopes for this plugin, largely because of the author’s notoriety with WordPress plugins.

    1. My main reason for wanting this plugin was to protect media pages. As I could not get it to work, I asked a support question and learned from Pippin Williamson that the plugin can NOT restrict media pages. I don’t see why the plugin options should appear on pages that cannot be restricted by the plugin. Not good.
    2. Another issue is that no matter which restriction option is chosen, comments still appear on a protected post. So visitors may see a whole bunch of comments with no article or context. Not good.
    3. Only the Administrator restriction gives a message on a protected post: “Administrator rights required to acess this page” (including spelling error). The other restriction options, Editor, Author, Contributor and Subscriber give no message. This also makes item 2 worse because there is no explanation when restricted by Editor, Author, Contributor and Subscriber. Not good.
    4. Excerpts of restricted posts (including featured image) are still showing up on the blog page no matter which level of protection is chosen. Not good.

Summary: As described above, Restrict Content has several issues, and IMO has little value. If you can’t find a better free plugin, look for a paid plugin, or hire a plugin developer to create one. With an unfinished plugin like this, I have wasted my time and got an unpleasant experience which I do not care to repeat, so I have no incentive to check out the paid version by the same author.

After uninstalling this plugin, I discovered that this plugin does not uninstall itself completely.

When editing a page, there are 2 leftover references in the Custom fields section. In the drop down menu where is says ‘Select’, the following two values are still present: rcFeedHide and rcUserLevel. The author is not alone in this error; I notice that a few other deleted plugins have also left orphan references here. Although benign, it is still an error and an irritation. I have degraded my rating from 2 stars to 1 star.
