Unexplainable Visitors from almost ONE and the same country

    I have a weird question/problem,

    Today is a Sunday. Normally my visitors’ numbers stay below 100. I did not do any real promotion today. Nothing blew up (Pinterest, Medium, stumbleupon – nothing!). Yet my visitors sky rocketed!!

    It’s now almost midnight and I’m at my all time record – I’m at over 1000 visitors (and at over 2000 visits) which has never happened before. My record was around 500 before, with lots of promotion. Now, that would be a good thing and I would be happy, EXCEPT almost all of it comes from one country – Russia. I do not write in russian, nor did I post anything of importance to that country and normally I barely get any clicks from Russia. But now, it’s almost all Russia.

    Also, I did not really get any comments. I mean… If there’s more than 1000 visitors, at least 1 or 2 comments would be plausible, right?

    So… Something’s fishy.

    I purged visitors with more than 10 clicks for the reason of deleting bots, but… the numbers went down by 3. That’s it.

    Something weird is happening and I’M worried.

    It’s just visits and there’s nothing wrong with your site as far as I can tell.

    Hey,

    oh my god, I’m so sorry, i didn’t know that was happening. I really didn’t intend that!

    I know there’s nothing wrong on the outside so to say, but it’s still continuing… I am again at over 500 visitors already. All from Russia….. No comments, no other page visits, just the main page.

    What should/could I do?

    There are various issues that might or might not be of specific concern to you, but the bottom line is about dealing with ‘bots hitting your site for whatever reason/s.

    NinjaFirewall is a plugin that can throttle or even stop some of the most-malicious traffic before it ever even gets to your WordPress installation.

    BulletProof Security is “best-in-class” (imho) for securing the gate and all service doors against invasion.

    Wordfence Security can do an excellent job of showing you what hits are getting through and then dynamically throttling or blocking them…and it is possible to even do “country blocking” if you are willing to pay a fee for the premium version. Then, I also use “Pages not found” in Wordfence to identify certain folder names and/or file names I then block either at NinjaFirewall or in BPS Custom Code.

    Again: You might or might not be specifically concerned about all of those things, and you might already have plenty of site security. Nevertheless, I have five sites in one account on shared servers and that is how I keep everything safe and under reasonable control.

    As leejosepho mentioned, I don’t think you’ve got any actual problems. If you like you can try adding one of the plugins above if you like.

    The only way to stop anyone from ever knocking on the door is to not have the door at all…and then even you would not be able to get in. The point of security is to guard the door, and “attempt” is the key word there: Nobody got through.

    Ok. I see! Thanks… Sorry, I am really freaking out because of those visitors from Russia. It stays everyday at over 1000 visitors and I cannot be even happy!
