Support » Fixing WordPress » Understanding spam vs trash

  • I’m a new WordPress user and I’m having a little trouble comprehending what the difference is between marking a comment as spam or trash. Once I shift by blog into WordPress I started instantly getting 10-20 spam comments per day, mostly in Russian.

I noticed I’m offered the choice of clicking either “spam” or “trash” for each one. At first I assumed WP had some sort of spam learning gizmo that would learn from each comment I marked as spam and starting figuring things out on its own, like email programs do when you mark something as spam. However, after a couple of weeks, it’s evident that either the spam system isn’t working on my WP or that’s not what it’s for.

As best I can tell spam and trash do the same thing, they just dump the message into a holding area where I have the option of deleting them later. If that’s the case, I don’t understand why I would mark any comments as spam? Why not just send them straight to the trash? Can anyone enlighten me?
