Support » Plugin: WordPress Share Buttons Plugin – AddThis » unclear how to add static meta image via WordPress plugin

    I am trying to set up my share buttons to use a specific image as the meta image when shared. It seems like I’m supposed to add my code in the WordPress plugin under “Advanced Settings > Developer Configuration > addthis_share. BUT from reading the documentation I find linked there, anything I add to this addthis_share box in the admin results in an error: Invalid JSON.

    What am I doing wrong?

    Things I’ve tried:
    "media": "https://myurl.logo.png"

    or

    <script type="text/javascript">
    var addthis_share =
    {
       "media": "https://myurl.logo.png"
    }
    </script>

    or

    var addthis_share =
    {
       "media": "https://myurl.logo.png"
    }

    The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

    Hi Beth!

    Thanks for contacting AddThis Support 🙂

    If you wish to set the shared image on social networks, such as Facebook, we suggest that you set the Open Graph Image meta tag (og:image).

    This is now the standard protocol from which social services pull in the image for sharing. Here is Facebook’s documentation on Open Graph tags which we think is pretty good at explaining how they work:
    https://developers.facebook.com/docs/sharing/webmasters/

    To make this easier, there are also many Open Graph plugins you can use as well.

    Let me know if you have any further questions!

    Thanks,
    Leland
