Hey y’all! I just activated AMP on my site and while checking validation on a URL I received the following notice:

    > The rechecked URL is free of non-removed invalid markup.

What’s that mean? Is that a good thing? A bad thing?

    Hi!

Yeah, that message is not very clear. It just means that there is no invalid markup that is remaining on the page. It has all been removed, leaving a valid AMP page.

Nevertheless, there may still have been invalid AMP markup on the page which caused validation errors, and yet the default action is to remove it. If you determine the invalid markup was OK to remove, you can mark it as “Reviewed”.

However, if removing that markup causes the page to break in some way, you should mark the markup status for the validation error as “Kept”. This will prevent the page from breaking, but it will also prevent the URL from being served as valid AMP.

Going forward in the world of Bento, we’re going to be moving toward a less draconian approach to AMP validation. Instead of AMP being valid or not, there will be degrees of how much AMP is being used. So you’ll be able to use AMP components alongside non-AMP markup together. In doing so you’ll get many of AMP’s speed benefits, but also be able to use your custom functionality that isn’t yet in an AMP component. And with Bento, in addition to using the Bento AMP components, you’ll also be able to create your own. It’s still early days for this, however. 😉 Watch this space.
