Upload images directly in Media > Add New, and assign to post or page then that images will show under unattached option in menu tab in the media library.
Now open post or page and set featured image using “Set featured image” link and add image using “Add Media” button . Now that image will show in Media Library but not in unattached option in menu tab in the media library.
Any media file NOT attached to any post or any page will list under unattached catagory.
Great! Thanks. So that means it would be safe to delete those files without jeopardizing the look of a page or post on a website. Correct?

Yes if you delete post or page than that images are still display under unattached option in menu tab in the media library.

I have thousands of unattached media images. Covering around 50+ GB of space. Please advise about any approach which is suitable for this job?
