Complete fresh installation 22 Oct unable to install plugins, the process just hangs. i suspect some kind of permission problem and raised it with hosting company and they suggested download and gave me cpanel access to upload. Able to upload and extract.

Now want to update as there are new versions of theme and plugins but when selecting update get the same problem with the process hanging.

Have compared file/folder permissions on another installation different host and everything seems the same.

The new hosting company are Egyptian and providing the service free as it is a community project which means my ability to kick arse is restricted :)

Can anyone suggest what the problem is? Can I do anything to fix easily (I am reasonably competent but this is outside my comfort zone).

    Have you gone through -

Do you have access to the server error logs?

I don't have access to the logs but if you tell me what they need to look for I can ask them to do it. I can also direct them to that link. I did check the file permissions but not the ownership frankly this bit scares me "you probably should not mess with this"

  5. Does the host allow outbound http connections? Some hosts don't allow it and it's required if you want to install/update plugins and themes from your WordPress dashboard.

Many thanks for all your help, I sent all those tips to the hosting guys and eventually they managed to sort it out.
