Unable to see anything in or type in the visual box

I’ve just set up a new WP installation and am unable to see anything that’s been added to a page in the visual screen, and am also unable to add anything using this screen.

I can use the Text screen though and see what’s been typed in there as well as add to it.

I deactivated all plugins and then renamed the plugins folder plugins-old and created a new empty folder called plugins and then changed the theme to Twenty Fourteen, but this didn’t help.
