Support » Plugin: Under Construction » unable to remove under construction page

This post is a continuation from an email conversation so I’ll include all messages up to now.

TL:DR I installed the “Under Construction Page” plugin almost 3 years ago, haven’t looked at the site since, now I can’t remove it despite trying the on/off toggle, uninstalling/reinstalling the plugin, clearing cache countless times and requesting refresh/CTRL+F5/nocache versions of the website in the browser. I can’t find anything wrong in .htaccess or any leftover plugin files in wp-content/plugins. The only thing I haven’t checked is the database but I’m afraid to go looking in there because of the risk of breaking the website.

I’m hoping WebFactory staff who know this software, including much older versions, and the issues it can cause will please help me get my website back.

    My email history with Support:

    Hi

Happy New Year. Hope you’re doing well.

I installed this plugin in 2020 for an extended leave of absence. I tried to turn it off but no matter what I do I can’t get the page to show anything other than a text-only version of the plugin page. I tried clearing cache, disabling with the toggle, deactivating the plugin, deleting the plugin, reinstalling again and repeating the previous steps. I’ve also tried visiting “https://laptoprepairpro.com/?nocache” to get a clean version but nothing works. I suspect my .htaccess file is corrupted or whatever handles URL rewrites to your page.

Could you please help me? How do I remove the remnants of the under construction page?

    Cheers

    Hi,
Thank you for using our plugin.

If you are using any caching plugins, please find the option to purge/delete memory from the plugin. Also, please force refresh the page by pressing CTRL+F5 if you’re using Windows/Linux or CMD+SHIFT+R if you’re using a Mac.

Please let us know the email you used to purchase the plugin.

    Kind Regards

    Hi Milos

Thanks for getting back to me. I am using LiteSpeed Cache but clearing the cache was among the first things I tried. Also, in addition to requesting a force refresh with CTRL+F5, I also tried loading the page from a private browsing session, using a different browser, using a private session on a different browser and just for fun, using Tor as well. The only time I can see the content of my page is when I’m logged in to WordPress.

Just for reference, LiteSpeed clears the cache every time a plugin is installed or removed or settings are changed so the fact that I uninstalled the Under Construction plugin, reinstalled it and uninstalled again would cause at least three separate cache purges. I’m reasonably confident the problem isn’t related to cache.

I’m not sure what else I can do… I had a look for the oldest backup of my page, hoping to find one from before I installed your plugin and unfortunately my hosting provider only keeps about 12 weeks of backups and I installed the backup and configured the page sometime before my son was born in April of 2020. Since backups aren’t an option, I hope you can think of something I can manually check and change. Although I checked .htaccess and can see nothing that would suggest a URL rewrite to an under construction page, nor are any files from your plugin left in “public html > wp-content > plugins” so I’m confused what it’s even loading.

I’m tempted to check the database for a leftover table that shouldn’t be there but I have no idea what to look for besides the text that’s on the page when you load it while not logged in.

As for my email, I didn’t buy the pro version, I just got it from the “add new” search bar inside the wordpress admin panel. I wasn’t sure if I’d ever return to this job so signing up to an indefinite subscription didn’t make sense at the time. I just clicked on the first result and saw that the FAQ said it definitely wouldn’t break the website so I quickly configured it and let it do its thing. I’m only now finding out that something did indeed break.

    Cheers

    Hi Adrian,
Unfortunately, email support is reserved for paying customers only who have the PRO version.

    It’s still cache 🙁

You can test with https://laptoprepairpro.com/?nocache=dsasda or any random parameter. The one Milos sent you probably got cached with UCP enabled as well.

Even if you don’t have any cache plugins your host could still have their own caching service. You might want to check your hosting admin and/or ask them how to clear it. As far as I can tell it’s LiteSpeed Cache but I can’t check for sure 🙁

    Thanks @talextech

I tried ?nocache but I clearly don’t understand how that parameter works because I didn’t know it had to have a value. My mistake. I have LiteSpeed Cache installed on WordPress but it does ring a bell that my hosting provider uses it to speed up other pages which aren’t WordPress-based. I’ll see if I have the power to clear it or if I can ask them to.

I’ll post about it if I need further help.

I think it worked! @talextech, you did it!

The hosting cpanel allowed me to purge all under advanced > cache manager, so it seems like the page is double-cached – once inside wordpress and again inside the hosting plan. Is that a problem? Feels like I should disable one of them…

    Great!

And no, it’s not a problem to have multiple cache layers but if your hosting already has cache the one in WordPress might not be needed. You might want to ask the developers of your cache plugin as they might offer features your hosting cache doesn’t.

Thanks very much for your advice. I’ll reach out to them and also do some tests turning each of them off for a week to see if anything improves or breaks or if there’s no difference.

I just know I have a lot more control over the one in WordPress – the other I can toggle on and off or purge, but this is done somewhere completely different than where the rest of the site is managed.

    Thanks again for everything.

    No problem! 🙂

    Hi Alexandru

I thought I was out of the woods with this problem but unfortunately my website only worked for like a day before caching broke it again. I’m definitely sure it’s cache related because the link you sent previously (https://laptoprepairpro.com/?nocache=dsasda) still displays the page.

However, what’s confusing matters now is that I’ve purged and disabled LiteSpeed Cache in WordPress as well as purged and disabled cache in the cpanel on the hosting site. The hosting site allegedly refreshes the cached version every 30 minutes so it shouldn’t matter in the grand scheme of things but I just wanted to rule out any potential issues.

This means that the page should now render from my hosting space each time with no caching but it’s not working. I’m not aware of any other cache solutions on my page so I don’t know what’s going on. I know this goes well beyond the scope of supporting your own plugin but have you got any ideas why the under construction page is still displayed?

    Cheers

I’d love to help you but from what you describe, I really don’t have any ideas 🙁 If you purged both cPanel and Litespeed Cache in WP. You should ask your host if they know anything.

Ok, crisis averted (again). I did as you said and contacted the hosting provider. Apparently, caching is not optional so when I “disabled” caching, what I actually did was disable the automatic purging feature, meaning that the cached version never got updated. I don’t understand why nothing different happened when I purged the hosting-level cache myself, but the support rep just clicked the same button I did and now it works.

Clearly, this is a sign I should just quit web design and leave it to the people whose buttons obey them when clicked. 🤦‍♂️😂

Once again, thank you for all your help.

Ah, each host has it’s own tricks you need to learn.

At least now you know what to do 🙂
