    I fear a little knowledge can be a dnagerous thing so forgive me if I am refering to things I don’t really understand.

    I had my site perfectly up and running through my domain host using their (German) version, 3.5. At the time I set it up the host would not allow the English installation so I had tweaked it with plugins to use both languages and otherwise did some groovy things to customize it for my business, basically non-bloggy. I had a back up of my site files on my hard drive.

    Nearly a year later I decided to clean up my files and move a different blog through wordpress.com also to the host as a wordpress.org. site. It didn’t have any content so I decided to just start over within the hosting WordPress installation, as I then noticed that it was now possible through the host to use/upgrade to the EnglishUS version, 3.6.1.. No problem there.

    I proceeded to update my main site, euroword.org from the 3.5 to the newer version. But it didn’t work. So I deleted all my databases on the server, mistakenly, as I should have left my old setup, but as the update didn’t work I just decided to start over, as I had the backup files.

    So I set up new databases and new installations for both sites. However, as it took a lot of work to customize my original 3.5 site I then decided to just upload the backup files again and try again to update.

    And here I am having trouble.

    euroword.org is now just a front at the moment with the new installation and no content, though this is usually my main business site, so I have to get this sorted out.

    euroword.eu is the site I am now trying to use as a test site to get the old setup back up and running. I have uploaded the backup files but it will not “load” and endlessly spins.

    (Yikes! It just occurred to me that maybe it does work and is trying for the cached version and I should just clear my cookies!)

    So then I downloaded a fresh 3.6.1 installation setup with no content and side by side compared it with the backup files, which tried to restore itself so some of the dates had changed, and by going through each of the folders I replaced the files in the new installation with only the older dated files of the backup, thinking I was getting just the content I wanted, but in the new installation.

    This does in fact seem to be progress as the installation will not load but at least I get the following error messages when it loads:

    Warning: require_once(/mnt/webk/d2/45/52640745/htdocs/WordPress_euroword/wp-settings.php) [function.require-once]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /mnt/webk/d2/45/52640745/htdocs/WordPress_euroword/wp-config.php on line 83

    Fatal error: require_once() [function.require]: Failed opening required ‘/mnt/webk/d2/45/52640745/htdocs/WordPress_euroword/wp-settings.php’ (include_path=’.:/opt/RZphp52/includes’) in /mnt/webk/d2/45/52640745/htdocs/WordPress_euroword/wp-config.php on line 83

    Then I took the clean wp-config.php file from the new installation, but this doesn’t work either.

    Sorry for the long post but it may help someone to help me! Please!
    I have backups of everything!

  • some plugins and files do need absolute path instead of relative paths. so this might be an issue with the backup files you have for plugins.

    If you have backup of your theme files and plugins first install your theme and then move your plugins and see if they can work with the current version of wordpress.
