I am unable to open the backup file downloaded via Firefox 14.0.1. I get the message :
Windows cannot open the folder.
The Compressed ﴾zipped﴿ Folder ‘D:\MyPages\Broadstone Pantomime\Support\Backups\WPOnlineBackup_Full.zip’ is invalid.
I tried to open via Windows 7, 7-zip, and then used the e-mail option to send me the file. None of the files can be opened.
How big is the file?
Would you be willing to send us the file to examine what is wrong with it?
I have only just created a site which I am testing, and the backup must be small compared to most. It is 27.4MB.
Let me have the email address to send the file.
Another thing – If I download the file in Chrome, it gets to 0% remaining, but does not complete even after a few minutes. I repeated this a number of times, but also without any success. Choosing the email option results in the file appearing in my inbox. I used Firefox without any problem (apart from the file not opening!).
The email is support “at” backup-technology .co.uk
Just reference this topic in the email body. Put Online Backup for WordPress or something in the subject and it should get the right people.
I will give the download a go with Chrome see if that is reproducible.
We got the file, and we can see the corruption – all the data is there but the corruption is odd we’re not sure how it’s happened.
We’ve got a diagnostics version you can try which will generate a log.
You can download it here: https://wordpress.backup-technology.com/wponlinebackup-423-tracing.zip
You’ll need to Deactivate and Delete the plugin you’ve already got installed (please note it will lose your settings, sorry). Then you go to Plugins, then click Add New at the top, click the Upload option and then upload the ZIP file above.
It will look like the usual plugin but will create a file called trace.log at /wp-content/plugins/wponlinebackup-423-tracing/trace.log
Please run an online backup and reproduce the problem. The log will have some file names and paths inside but nothing any more sensitive than that.
You can email your blog URL to support “at” backup-technology.co.uk and we can try to access the trace.log in our web browser and see what’s happening. Or you could download it via FTP, compress it, and email it.
We can then investigate. Let me know if you aren’t sure on any of the above.
We got the trace log files. Apologies for the delay it was in the spam filter (hurray -.-)
Just looking at it now.
We’re not entirely sure what is causing the issues for you but it looks related to the fact your site may be distributed across multiple servers and a remote disk.
I’ll produce a test version with a few tweaks we think might help and give you a link when it’s completed so you can try it out.
Please can download the following and try this one:
It might work and fix the problem you are having, or it might have no effect. If you can let us know that will help with the progress.
I’ve been away on holiday for 3 weeks and haven’t had a chance to do anything yet. It will take a few days before I can try out you new download and I’ll let you know the results.
If you just update to 2.2.15 it has the same changes as we did in the test one. So just use that one and see if it has any effect.
I have updated to 2.2.15 just now and ran the backup. I still get errors and a 0 bytes are backed up. Here is a section of the Activity Log :

22nd Dec 2012 1.57.00 PM Error The backup failed: The server attempted to retrieve the data, but received junk from your blog. This can happen if your blog is not accessible over the internet. Otherwise, you may have a third-party plugin installed that is changing the backup data as the server tries to receive it. Please contact support if this is the case so we may improve compatibility.
22nd Dec 2012 1.56.05 PM Information The backup is 48.08 MiB in size. Starting transmission to the online vault.
22nd Dec 2012 1.56.05 PM Information Deleted files processing completed.
22nd Dec 2012 1.56.01 PM Information File collection completed.
I’ll continue looking into it after the holiday period, but it is a difficult problem. It does look the server has some form of delayed write in effect yet there is more than one server, so there is absolutely no way to ensure that data written to a file will be visible by the next server without forcing some form of delay, which would be unworkable. It looks very much like delayed write problem.
