Every page loads the index.php file which then uses a function to fetch a different file based on the page. Pages will get their content from content-page.php and posts use content.php.

You can copy content-page.php into your child theme to override the HTML structure for all pages. To create a custom homepage, add a front-page.php file to the child theme. You can copy the contents of index.php as a starting point.

For your reference, Mission News follows the standard template hierarchy as outlined here: https://developer.wordpress.org/themes/basics/template-hierarchy/

I’m trying to customize my frontpage(page) but can’t locate the files.

Add a new file to your child theme called front-page.php. Mission News only uses index.php to allow developers maximum control over the template hierarchy, so it doesn’t include this file by default.
