You probably have a page named “home” in trash. Empty trash and you’ll be able to re-use the slug.

I have emptied the trash but I am still unable to remove the ‘home’ from the homepage. I get a 404 error if I go to the root directory.

What do you have set as the home page in settings->reading?

Both the site url and wordpress url are set to the root directory http:/medats.uk.org

I just reread your post and see that I answered the wrong question. I don’t know how it changed, but that setting was the problem. All fixed now!
