Support » Plugin: The SEO Framework » Unable to edit title directly

  • Hello,

I was not able to find out if there is a solution for this or not, so I would like to ask here.

When being in editor and scrolling down to the SEO plugin in, title and description is already filled with some text as a placeholder. Most of times it is too long, so I want to shorten it. When clicking into the field, the placeholder is gone and I have to type the whole title. Is that the behaviour as it should be ? I expected it to be filled out with an editable text, so I just can delete some words without typing (or copy and paste it) again. Same with the description.

Is there an option to change this behaviour ?

Thanks in advance for any help!

We’ve considered direct-edits for the title and description placeholder fields, but it ultimately comes down to hijacking default browser-input-behavior, which crumbles accessibility.

Before we implement features, we must also consider how it affects visually impaired users (among thousands of other pedantic details). What may be beneficial to some can be a nightmare to others. Therefore, we opt to stay as close to default as possible.

I know that it can be a bit cumbersome to work with these limitations. Nevertheless, I hope you understand our decision. Have a beautiful day! 🙂

Thanks for explanation. Since I am not an expert in webdesign I would like to read some studies about this topic to understand your decision. Could you provide some links for deeper insights into this topic ?

    No problem 🙂

It’s a mixture of several things I took with me along the way. Here are some interesting topics related to this issue you can explore:

Adding such an edit-as-is field would mess with the focus order (or be unreachable via alternative inputs, violating more WCAG requirements), cause inconsistencies (this feature only applies to some fields), and the placeholder field will act differently than expected (users must learn a new thing, and placeholders are already considered a terrible design language).

Lastly, the “clear button” in IE10+ is already an overlying button that interfered with our initial idea of adding a pencil on the side of the form field. Discriminating between browsers is another consistency violation.

There’s a lot more to this. I think it’d be best to throw the whole thing out and start anew, or work with the limitations to the best of our abilities 🙂
