• I can chose “themes” with headers. However, once they are deleted, I cannot add them back UNLESS I SKIP THE CROPPING and use the header JPG just as it is.

Nor, can I create a new header on site in development whenever I choose to “crop” the image. I get this error message: “Image could not be processed. Please go back and try again.”

If I SKIP CROPPING, the header image is added to the pages.

This sounds like an issue with your theme, so I would first contact them, if you downloaded the theme from wordpress.org you can go to the theme page and click the support option. Alternatively if downloaded elsewhere then contact them directly.

This behavior occurs on either of the three built-in themes, or on the couple I have download from the WordPress site.

This may be a clue. I deleted the downloaded theme. I now only have the three default themes. It appeared to me that some “plug-ins” were left behind after I removed the new theme, and thus, I deleted them. Maybe I inadvertently deleted a required plug in. What plug-ins should I see in a “clean installation”? And, how do I get the original themes reinstalled without a complete WordPress reinstall? How do I backup my site I have spent hours working on that is based on one of these default themes in case a reinstall is called for?
