“We were unable to create the wordfence-waf.php file in the root of the WordPress installation. It’s possible WordPress cannot write to the wordfence-waf.php file because of file permissions. Please verify the permissions are correct and retry the installation.”

Getting the above error. Went through Google and the link below trying to figure out what’s going on and unable to pinpoint the issue. It’s on an AWS instance with Apache, full read/write permissions… any other ideas of what I could try?

  • Hi @perkypixel

Make sure that the owner of your WordPress files/directories is the same as the web server user, also check (Wordfence > Tools > Diagnostics) page and let me know if you can spot any red warnings there, specially in the Wordfence Firewall and File system section.

    Thanks.

    Hi @perkypixel

Since we haven’t heard from you for a while I’m going to go ahead and resolve this thread. If you have any other questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to open a new one.

    Thanks.

I am also having this problem but using a hosting site so do not have access to these directories. I also do not have the ftp setup as far as I know. I am using the latest version of WP. Do I need to setup an ftp access and if so, what do you recommend I use. I have not warnings in the Diagnostic Tools section and did find the PHP Environment Process Owner name but not sure where in WP to see if this is the right name to use. I am a novice to WP and need basic instructions.

I read the resolve post that said:
You can check who that use should be by looking at the Wordfence Tools > Diagnostics page, in the PHP Environment section where it says “Process Owner”. That is who should own the files in that folder to write to.

The user name under process owner in the PHP section for WordFence is the correct username and the one I use for FileZilla.

When I go into FileZilla using the Process Owner shown above and the
    .htaccess is set to .rw-r–r–
and I cannot change it to .rw-rw-r–
if that make any difference. I do get permission denied when trying to change attributes so I do not know if that means I do not have the Process Name?

What do I do now, I am stumped.
