  • I’m getting this error when uploading images: unable to create directory wp-content/uploads/2018/09. Is its parent directory writable by the server? I was getting a different error message last night – something to do with not being able to add the image to a directory folder. I spoke to my host since I found that this issue can sometimes be caused by switching hosts (which I didn’t). My host said my storage is full and I need to delete files. I have a few years worth of large files because my camera takes very large images (5000×3000). There are thousands of images, do you think there is a way to quickly/bulk scale them down?
    Thank you.

  • Thank you for that suggestion; however, when I try to install a plugin, I receive the following message: “Install Failed! Installation failed: Could not create directory.” Is this related to the above issue? How can I fix this?

Also, I’ve been going through and manually scaling down my images to try to make more space to upload this plugin, and when I change the pixels to less than half of the original size, it doesn’t change the file size at all. Yet when I scale it down on my desktop, the file size changes significantly from 5-6 mbs to a few hundred kbs. Why?

Trying to change the image through the image editor will only create yet another copy of the image, so that does not help.
Your best bet is to use FTP or your hosting control panel File Manager to delete some of the intermediate sizes of several files (the ones with the dimensions at the end of the name) so that you have room for the plugin. It probably needs some room to work also, so deleting more is better. Then let it crunch the images and depending on the plugin it will recreate the ones you deleted. If it does not, you can run Regenerate Thumbnails.

My website is in WordPress. I am getting the same error while uploading the very small image. I have gone through the cpanel and created both directories and applied the permission 7 7 7 but still the same issue I am facing.
