I have an existing website hosted with 1and1 and want to develop a new website using WordPress. I’ve setup XAMPP, created a MySQL database with 1and1, edited the wp-config.php page with the database info and receive the following error:

    Error establishing a database connection

This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can’t contact the database server at localhost. This could mean your host’s database server is down.

Are you sure you have the correct username and password?
Are you sure that you have typed the correct hostname?
Are you sure that the database server is running?

If you’re unsure what these terms mean you should probably contact your host. If you still need help you can always visit the WordPress Support Forums.

Has anyone been able to successfully setup a remote server on their local hard drive and connect to a 1and1 database?

Check your database credentials with your hosting provider

I found out that they do not allow for remote access to the database. I did however find a workaround. I created a subdomain and pointed that domain to a folder on the server. That will allow me to keep the existing website intact while I work on the new website and when I move the files over to the server, the URL’s won’t get messed up.
