Dear Google community and support team,

I have some trouble to complete the set up of Google Site Kit(GSK) on my website.

Originally I used this plugin on the same FQDN, but I decided to start again on a new install as the architecture was so different. So I disconnected from this installation (through GSK administration page).

Now, I am trying to set up my GSK plugin on my new installation but I am totally stuck. After the step 1, I can log into my Google account and authorise GSK app to use what it needs (or review what I previously authorised). Then, it brings me back to step 1 again and again without any piece of information.

    Solutions I already tried:
    – switch theme to Twenty Nineteen (as recommended)
    – disable all the others plugins
    – allow search engine indexing*
    – reset GSK plugin, deactivate and reactivate it, hard delete and reinstall
    – update WP (last version 5.4.2), update GSK plugin (last version 1.12.0)
    – remove the access of GSK app to my Google account
    – delete the old properties on Google Search Console and Google Analytics (still in the trash)
    – delete DNS verification entry for Google Postmaster
    – try to set up on several OS (Windows 10, Linux, and Android), and on several browsers (Firefox, new Edge, and Chrome)
    – tried in incognito surfing

I thought it would be a non handled exception on your side because I did not get any error messages. But I checked my logs and I noticed that even if I am moved back to the step 1, my server receives a verification code. And of course, errors logs are empty.

Please find my site health info and those access logs on the form. I will upload it as soon as possible.

May you help me to solve this issue?

    Kind regards

I just filled the form with the site health information and the access logs.

Many thanks for sharing the troubleshooting steps undertaken, and sorry to hear you’ve been unable to connect. From checking your provided information it looks like you may have your WordPress files in a separate wp directory from your current bedrock environment. As such you may be experiencing setup failure similar to those as described in the below GitHub issue:
    https://github.com/google/site-kit-wp/issues/1523

Can you confirm this is correct and whether you’re happy for me to share some of this information on that GitHub issue?

Yes, I do. I use bedrock, and I used it on the previous production server and it was working perfectly. I did not thought it could be the origin of my problem.

I read the issue you mentioned. Is there any solutions?

Sure, you can share it on Github (I already opened an issue), without the FQDN and my personal & server IPs.

We’re still investigating this at present, although I’ll add your details as suggested to the related GitHub issue.

In your case can you try and manually verify your site within Search Console before attempting Site Kit setup? There may already be a listing for your domain with verification details when you access this link. Check the verification method and ensure your Google account (the same which you use to setup Site Kit) has access.

We can also keep you updated here with any updates while we investigate further.

    Good morning,

So, I did what you asked. First, I deleted the old validations, and I started again the set up.

I could reach the step 1 (validation of the property) with the “proceed” button but could not get further. Whereas the validation was okay as I can see it on the webmaster centre.

Then I added the validation of the domain through GSC, but I cannot remove the registrations for the website (tells me that the validation file is still online) even if I reset Google Site Kit (the html validation file is not found anymore through the URL). So, I think I have to wait.

I will try to do first the GSC registration and then do the set up again asap.

    Stay tuned.

Finally, I removed all the registration and I did the GSL one again. I am still stuck into the set up loop.

And now, the set up is not creating any new registration through HTML file.

Many thanks for sharing your findings, very useful to know. I’ll update the GitHub issue accordingly to keep others impacted and our team aware.

While it’s not straightforward to setup a Bedrock environment as you have have you ever attempted verifying your site in Search Console via a domain type property, before attempting Site Kit setup?

    Hello there,

I just set up Google Site Kit (GSK) on a staging environment (without the helper plugin). I deployed an exact copy of my live website and the setup of GSK worked perfectly.

My feeling is that we are investigating in the wrong way, it appears that Bedrock might not be the source of my problem. I believe that the source of my problem is the fact that I already set up the same website in the past, and now there is an non handled exception in the set up because of that.

    What do you think?

Sorry about the delay in responding to this topic. We’re currently looking into methods of extended support for local setups. While the Bedrock issue is also being worked on you may be correct in relation to possible issue due to having setup the same website previously. If you’re still having trouble I can enquire with the team who can check site on the Site Kit service and report back to you here if you like.
